Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours at the 500 level or above each semester in order to be eligible for Federal Student Loans and for UNCG to certify enrollment for a loan repayment deferment.
Semester Enrollment Requirements for Graduate Students:
Full-time status = 6 or more credit hours
Half-time status = 3 to 5 credit hours
Students taking courses through the Graduate School who are not yet admitted into a program are not eligible to receive federal or UNCG funding. You also must be enrolled for courses that count toward your degree.
Receiving some types of awards, including fellowships and tuition waivers, may decrease Federal Student Loan eligibility.
If you are classified as an undergraduate in the Fall semester and will become a graduate student in the Spring semester, you must notify the FAO in writing immediately of this change. Your award will need to be revised to reflect your graduate status.

If you are transferring from UNCG, you should contact the FAO at the school you will be attending.

Limited financial aid is available to students attending Summer Session at UNCG. Most students can only receive Federal Student or PLUS loans that are based on their remaining eligibility from the 2005-2006 award year. You must have made satisfactory academic progress at the end of the Spring 2006 semester to be considered for Summer aid.
For most types of aid, including federal loans, you must be enrolled at least half time. Summer Session course work is subject to the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Policy for Financial Aid Eligibility (see page 18).

Students participating in study abroad programs are encouraged to select a person to act as their Limited Power of Attorney during the time they will be abroad. This individual should have convenient access to UNCG. Obtaining a Limited Power of Attorney allows your designee to sign financial aid checks requiring your signature that may become available after your departure. The Limited Power of Attorney form may be obtained from the UNCG Office of International Programs.
Before going abroad, leave signed copies of your federal tax return, all W-2s, and 1099s with a parent or your designated Power of Attorney in case they are requested by the FAO. It is your responsibility to make arrangements for receiving your mail while you are away.
Spring and/or Summer Study Abroad
If you plan to continue attending UNCG and receiving financial aid for the next academic year, you will need to make arrangements to complete the financial aid application process from abroad. To avoid delays in receiving your Fall semester aid, complete the FAFSA before March 1 and respond promptly to all correspondence from the FAO.
Satisfactory Academic Progress and Study Abroad
All course work taken abroad is subject to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Financial Aid Eligibility. It is the student's responsibility to assure that a full-time course load is successfully completed and that all credits from the host institution are posted to their UNCG transcript promptly. If you are studying abroad in Fall 2005 and returning to UNCG for the Spring 2006 semester, your credits from the host institution must be posted to your UNCG transcript by March 15, 2006. If you study abroad in the Spring 2006 semester or for the academic year, the deadline for confirmation that you completed the program must be sent to the Office of International Programs by August 15, 2006, and the deadline for grades to be received by UNCG is October 1, 2006. These extended deadlines apply only to students in exchange programs. Students in departmental study abroad programs must have their credits posted by the end of the UNCG term.
Any student whose credits are not posted by the deadline or who did not make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) will have subsequent financial aid canceled and will be required to immediately repay any financial aid received for the current academic year. You may appeal your SAP status. See pages 18 & 19.
For more information regarding financial aid eligibility for study abroad, please contact the FAO. For information about individual study abroad programs, contact the UNCG International Programs Center , at (336) 334-5404.

You must be enrolled in the current semester and have no outstanding previous emergency loans in order to apply.
To obtain an emergency loan, fill out an application in the FAO. Call or stop by the following work day to see if your application was approved. You must then take your approved application (which the FAO will give back to you) over to the Cashiers and Student Accounts Office to pick up the funds.
You must repay the Cashiers Office within 30 days or by the end of the semester, whichever occurs first. Loan funds or other aid you are to receive will cover your emergency loan. Your emergency loan will be charged to your student account.
An emergency loan is a serious obligation that must be repaid by the deadline. Failure to repay an emergency loan in a timely manner revokes a student's eligibility for future funding with the emergency loan program. Academic records will also be withheld pending repayment.
Emergency loan funds may become depleted during the course of a semester. If that occurs, these funds will not be available again until the first day of classes of the next semester.
