Outside Scholarships

Funds and/or goods awarded to a student from any entity other than UNCG (such as high schools, civic groups, churches, sororities & fraternities, educational foundations, etc.) are considered outside educational resources. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Financial Aid Office of any outside resources that have been awarded to them, even if the funds or goods have been given directly to them (such as a laptop computer or a check made payable directly to the student).

Please submit scholarship checks and copies of award letters directly to the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. If the check has been made payable or co-payable to the student, the student should endorse the back of the check before submitting it to the Financial Aid Office. The student’s full legal name and UNCG ID number should be listed on all correspondence.

Outside scholarship checks sent to UNCG will be processed first by the Financial Aid Office. Then they will be forwarded to the Cashiers and Student Accounts Office to be applied towards your student bill. If donors do not provide written instructions to the contrary, scholarship checks will be divided equally between the fall and spring semesters. If donors require a billing statement or invoice, please provide them with a copy of your billing statement from the Student Account Center.

In some cases, an outside scholarship may affect a student’s other financial aid, often by reducing the student loan amount or altering the student loan type (e.g. subsidized versus unsubsidized) that you are eligible to receive. The reason for a change is due to the fact that a student’s total financial aid package, including outside resources, cannot exceed their Estimated Cost of Attendance for the academic year.  Students can view their revised financial aid award via UNCGenie.
