Spring 2020 Disbursement & Emergency Loan Information

Spring financial aid funds will be paid to student bills starting January 3, 2020 for students who are registered for spring classes and whose registration is confirmed. On January 6, 2020, the Cashiers Office will begin to process refunds to students and students should receive them by January 10th. Most of our students receive their refunds before the first day of classes. To ensure you are one of these students, check the following items and make any necessary updates before January 1, 2020:

  1.  Accept all the financial aid you need to cover your bill. Refunds are generated because you have more aid than your charges each semester. Please note that financial aid is disbursed on attending hours.  This means if your classes do not begin on the first day of classes, your disbursement will be delayed until classes begin.  This could affect the amount and timing of your refund, as you may not receive the full amount of your refund until later in the semester.  Use the UNCGenie Guide for help.
  2.  Please make sure you update your mailing address on UNCGenie as your refund check will go to your campus mailbox if you live on campus or to your local address if you live off campus. Your address needs to be correct even if you are using Direct Deposit. Also, make sure that your bank accounts are set up correctly in the Student Account Center.
  3. Verify that your registration is confirmed for spring. Financial aid funds will not be paid to your account if your registration is not confirmed.
  4.  Review and complete the Title IV Authorizations for aid.
  5.  Check your registration for repeat coursework. Being enrolled in repeat hours can impact your disbursement. (You must be enrolled at least half-time to receive funds from most aid programs: Undergraduate and Graduate Licensure = 6 hours per semester; Graduate = 4.5 hours per semester.)
  6.  Complete all outstanding requirements, especially the Master Promissory Note (MPN) and/or Entrance Counseling for your loans. If you have just accepted your loan on UNCGenie within the last 3 weeks, work is continuing on those loans. You will see the MPN requirement updated after you have accepted it and certification is complete. You may track this on UNCGenie.
  7.  Check your Satisfactory Academic Progress link in UNCGenie. If you need to submit an appeal, click here for more information about Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  8.  If you have been charged the health insurance premium and you plan to waive out of the policy, please be aware that it can take up to ten days for the charge to be removed from your student account.

If you do not have money applied to your student bill by January 3rd, you will need to resolve one or more of the above issues for your aid to pay. Once you have resolved the issue, your funds will be disbursed to your student account. If you are due a refund, it will be processed the week following the payment. Also, remember to check your registration to see if you have classes that begin mid semester.  Your refund may be delayed until those classes begin.

Finally, please make sure your UNCG Email Account is activated and that you check it frequently. This is the primary means of communicating with you and we don’t want you to miss any important messages.

Spring Emergency Loan Applications available on UNCGenie starting January 8, 2020

To apply for an Emergency Loan please log in to UNCGENIE, select the “Financial Aid” tab, then select “Emergency Loan Application”. Please make your request in whole dollars (do not include cents in your amount requested).

If you will be repaying the loan with pending financial aid, you can apply for a maximum of $1200 if you have expected aid to cover that amount.

You will be contacted via your UNCG email address concerning the status of your application.

If your request is approved, you will be emailed your approval document to print and take to the Cashiers Office (along with your photo ID) to receive your funds. There is a $5 processing fee for all approved emergency loans that will be added to your account balance by the Cashiers Office when you receive your funds. If you have outstanding financial aid requirements or have already received an emergency loan for the current semester, you will be unable to apply for an Emergency Loan through this process.

We hope these tips will help give you a smooth start to the semester!
